Job Description for the Director of Educational Ministry (DEM)
The Director of Educational Ministry is responsible for directing and working to expand the
Sunday School, which currently consists of 50 children in 6 age groups, as well as maintaining
and developing programs for elementary, high school and college‐age youth. The DEM also
manages all childcare arrangements and assists the pastor in the Adult Education program.
The position requires 30 hours per week, including Sundays and some weekday evenings for 11
months, with one summer month off per year. Adult Education classes typically meet at 9:30
a.m. on Sundays. Sunday School meets concurrent with worship starting at 11 a.m. Except on
communion Sundays, the children attend the first 15 minutes or so of worship in the sanctuary,
leaving for classrooms after the Children’s Sermon. Childcare for children under age 3 is
provided during both adult and children’s Sunday School as well as during worship.
Responsibilities
Current expectations:
• Supervise the teaching of children’s Sunday School classes, and fill in as a substitute teacher
when needed.
• Lead the Sunday School in worship.
• Recruit, train and motivate the teachers (volunteer and paid).
• Manage and arrange childcare during regular worship services as well as special church
events.
• Coordinate and build the Youth group.
• Support the Pastor in preparation of Confirmation classes and Adult Ed classes.
• Under supervision of the Christian Education Committee, manage childcare budgets and
personnel.
• Coordinate and plan Vacation Bible School in the summer as well as other special events
throughout the year.
• Prepare Youth to lead worship at least one Sunday per year.
• Serve as a resource for the Christian Education Committee in the selection of class curricula
and other needed educational resources.
• Work with the church office staff to set up and maintain the Sunday School roster and a
record of the children and families reached by our church programs.
• Reach out into the community to expand the size of the Sunday School program.
Areas of potential development:
• A music program for children
• Working with other churches to develop a neighborhood Christian Education group
• Program for teens
• Family ministries program
Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree
• A person with demonstrated experience and reliability in Christian Education and relevant
educational training.
• Although not necessarily a Presbyterian, we seek someone with an understanding of and
appreciation for the Reformed Tradition.
• Someone who enjoys children and sees them as whole people.
• Someone who can work with many different kinds of family units.
• Someone who is enthusiastic and creative, has excellent people‐skills, is a good
administrator, a self‐starter, an organizer, and is also fun to be around.
• Someone who can also bring their own ideas and creativity to this effort to reach children,
youth and adults through educational activities.
• Musical and artistic abilities are a plus.
Relationships
The DEM reports to the Pastor, as Head of Staff. The DEM will work primarily with the Christian
Education Committee and consult with other committees of the church as the need arises‐‐all of
these committees being responsible to the Session.
Salary
Commensurate with experience; excellent benefits.
Timeline

preferred with potential for extension upon review.
